This book is a good way of learning about the life of war refugees. It is the true story of a boy who travels with his mom to England seeking asylum. They left from war-torn Iraq after his dad was killed by the authorities for taking part in a Kurdish opposition group during the reign of Saddam Hussain.

What makes this book particularly interesting is that it is told by the boy Mohammed in his own words. We learn about their journey and their time in Britain from his genuine perspective. We see him - not as a political burden to be dealt with - but as a boy who has seen death; has lost his father; and has been torn away from his normal life where he belonged.

The book is illustrated with actual pictures of this family as well as some informative illustrations. Note that this book was published in 2009 before the current waves of immigration to Europe that are causing much controversy.
