Published in 1912 in Sweden this beautiful picture book tells the story of a boy who has outgrown his clothing and needs a new suit. The charming tell illustrated at each step with wonderful drawings take us through the process of shearing sheep, spinning wool, making material and sowing an outfit. The story takes place in pre-industrial Sweden and we see many loveable images of life in a village. My favourite must be one of Pelle’s grandmother carding wool beside the fireplace.

This book is a classic. It teaches something about the processes and the labour behind materials, as well as giving an intriguing insight into history and traditional life. Many talking points come up, including: how hard children were expected to work in the past.

This book is certainly worthwhile
