A wonderful first book of the fantasy series named: Chronicles of Prydain. This book is fantasy for children at its best. It has admirable, loveable heroes; valiant knights, princesses and mythical creatures; healthy relationships depicted; it draws clear lines between good and evil; it is packed with danger and adventure, yet without being overly-explicit and stressful (like most modern publications are); it values courage, love and friendship; it shows how self-sacrificial acts of kindness lead to real success.
It is a book that shows the aggressiveness of evil without being dark or tiring. It manages to keep a joyful tone, emphasising always the good, showing up the greatness of the human spirit in the face of affliction.
What else is there to say? It is also a fun story. These books are classics. The second book in the series has won a Newberry award. This series has it all, including a setting based on beautiful Welsh countryside (and legends).
A very worthwhile read for children who want to have a wild adventure, make new literary friends, and raise their heart and spirits up high. For children who dream of wielding a sword in the war against evil, for the triumph of all that is glorious.
