This book is a ‘what-if’ story. What if humans became infertile and no one was able to conceive any more children. What would an entirely childless British society look like? This novel is a very interesting social study of how important it is for human societies to produce offspring.

A lot of themes are discussed - I won’t spoil it for you. Many images from this book will stay in the readers mind and cultivate serious thinking about modern life. This book is a provocation to think deeply about our priorities in modern societies. At the same time, it is a well-written engaging adventure story.

You may have seen the film based on this book. A fun film, but it is worth reading the book nevertheless. It is significantly different from - and often better than- the film. A ‘relevant’ story that will help us see our lives from a new perspective.

The book has been characterised as a dystopia, but it is not particularly dark or heavy.
