An excellent retelling of a Danish classic folktale. Virginia Haviland brings this story to English speakers, and brings it to life at the same time. Melissa Sweet’s illustrations are wonderful (and certainly sweet).

Reading fairytales from other lands is a great way for children to travel and expand their worldview. Often the retelling of traditional tales is done badly, but Virginia Haviland is undoubtedly one of the best tellers of the world’s folk tales in English. I recommend all her collections of fairytales.
