This picture book won a Caldecott Metal and it is easy to see why. Written in the late 1940’s it enwraps its readers in the beauty of childhood and family life.

A little girl named Sal goes up a mountainside with her mother to gather berries for jam-making. She comes face to face with a bear and her cub. This simple yet intriguing story achieves to walk its reader along the fine line between nature being beautiful and friendly, and it being wild and dangerous.

A classic tale that brings us into a world of the past that is timeless nonetheless. Robert McCloskey is always a worthwhile author.
