Children, like everyone else, love reading mysteries. The type of plot is intriguing to them. Fortunately, the well-known mystery writer McCall Smith has written series of mysteries that are intended for little people, without any of the gore and violence that make mysteries inappropriate for children. This book is he first in (one of) his series. The characters are exciting and likeable. Young readers wish they could be them. The pace is perfect. It is not stressful, but it is always moving forward. The scenes are full of family love, chocolate, intelligent pets, danger and adventure. It all works out well in the end. They get their cake and they eat it too. A pleasant book that keeps children on their toes throughout.

You can read this book aloud to a 5 year old, and a seven year old can enjoy it on their own.
