An adventure story for this who like scouting; camping and bushcraft. Set in the Ochil hills of Scotland, it is a story of freedom, adventure and danger. Gavin comes to Scotland to visit his aunt and meets and joins 3 siblings who roam the countryside pretending to be clansmen. The book is the first of a quartet of books known as the Clan Series.

The books are cleverly written, packed full with true information about Scottish wildlife and history. I was laughing to myself when my son read these books. To my ears they sounded like a lecture on Scotland’s natural and  (some) cultural heritage - but my son thought they were the most exciting adventure books. They were his favourite. The reader learns a lot, and has even more fun running wild in the great outdoors.

We meet the various creatures of the forest, as well as dangerous adult criminals. These are books where children find solutions to serious problems. I read these aloud to a seven year old, but they are intended for a 14+ year old to read on their own.

I would not class these books as appropriate for adults (unlike much good young person’s literature) because an adult will find them didactical. Young people will love them and benefit from them however. All of the books in the set are worthwhile. It is best to read them in order but each book can also stand alone.
