I love all of Evelyn Davies’ children stories. This lovely book can be read on its own, but it is properly the companion of a previous work entitled Little Bear’s Feather. I strongly recommend reading them both.

The story, written in the 1970’s, is about a young English boy who travels to the ‘New World’ with his parents in search of a better life. The book takes place amid the Europeans who settled the United States, and the Red Indians that they encountered there. It is a story about friendship and the desire for having a home.

Readers ‘experience’  various interesting facts about history, as well as about nature. There is a special surprise here for those who like horses! I have read this book aloud to a child as young as 4, and I expect a nine year old could read it independently. The beautiful illustrations deserve a mention as well.
