I’ll start by putting my cards on the table and saying that C.S. Lewis is my favourite genius. This book offers up (proper) Christian theology in the form of a novel. The concepts it carries are deep but they can be appreciated by every reader.
The story is written from the perspective of a senior demon who is mentoring his nephew - a demon in training - about how to bring about the damnation of a young adult British man. It is written as a satire though it touches on the serious themes of temptation and salvation. It is a simple enough book to read and enjoy but its theological concepts are thorough and worth thinking over seriously.
C.S. Lewis had dedicated the book to his friend J.R. Tolkien. An important book for Christian young people navigating life. It is full of worthwhile insights and solutions to relevant problems. Like all of Lewis’ works, it covers many themes in a genuine and even profound way. The backdrop is Britain in the time of WW2 and we see something of the life of young men in those days.
