The books by Beatrix Potter are real treasures. The language she uses is beautiful and poetic; her drawings are childish yet serious and handsome. They tell the story as well as the words do. The stories themselves are tales from the everyday lives of various creatures found in British farmlands and their surrounding nature. The little animals are personified for the stories, but they retain much of their natural characteristics.
This balance between reality and imagination are what make Potter’s books so ingenious and special. She spoke to children without oversimplifying her tales, and she describes wildlife’s creatures in imaginative tales without reducing their dignity and personality.
I strongly suggest buying the boxset that contains all of the Peter Rabbit series of books. Each one is special, together they are marvellous. They are a beautiful thing for children to look at.
Make sure you get the books with the original illustrations. Don’t let the modern take on Peter Rabbit interfere with a child’s deep enjoyment of these original books.
