This book is about an (extended) family getting together on Christmas Eve: the lovely atmosphere of that, the cousins playing together while the adults sit around talking. It is about cooking together. It is about the happiness of family. Really though, this book is about a young girl who desires to be adult-like and feminine like her mother. The little girl has an experience that many young girls have, of borrowing her mother's jewellery secretly and causing an accident.

Much about growing up and being a family is subtly depicted in this short story. The adventure that occurs is humorous (and realistic) and will keep young readers on their toes until the end. The illustrations are also special. Each one of them could have been a work of art.

A happy book about family. The language used is appropriate for primary school children to read on their own. A pre-literate child would certainly enjoy hearing the story also.
