This is a well-written easy to read book of historical fiction about the battle of Hastings. It is written in a simple first-person manner that is intended to bring the reader into the story as directly as possible. It is part of a series of books known as the 'I was there' books that hope to teach history to children.
The book has an engaging manner and young readers feel like they are living through the events of the book. Readers learn about medieval military tactics, the British royal politics that brought William the Conqueror, Viking raids, and the life and training of the sons of aristocratic families. This book has a lot to teach, and yet it does simply.
The story is an intriguing adventure, the content is interesting and educational, and many of the characters are admirable. Another good book in this worthwhile historical series.
