For those who read the first book 'Pollyanna' and loved it, this second part will be a joy to read. It follows Pollyanna as she grows up. It shows us something of her as a 12 year old, showing how her happy attitude adapts and survives to meeting new more complex 'realities'. The book then skips to Pollyanna being 20 years old, falling in love and getting engaged.
The author Eleanor Porter does a good job of writing a second book on the same theme without it being just more of the same. There is enough continuity between the two books to please readers, but 'Pollyanna Grows Up' certainly takes the concepts further, considers them in more depth an matures, together with the little girl herself.
The second part of the book is a lovely old-school love story. In today's over-sexualised world, it is important for our children to hear stories about people of the past. Love stories about people who knew each other for years, who developed friendship alongside their romance, and who kiss for the first time at the moment of their engagement. This book will give readers the chance to enjoy an innocent and realistic romance full of beauty. At the same time the books makes the case for a thankful and joyful approach to life that is worth considering!
