Older publications of children’s picture books often worthwhile because the illustrations were made by hand. You can see that the author made their best effort composing the drawings. This gives the artwork a feeling of quality that it is good for children to examine. Many modern children’s books are illustrated casually using computer images that give them a feeling of nothingness, emptiness and worthlessness. I do not agree that we should give these to our children who look at everything so closely and learn from everything so deeply. You can read more about this issue HERE.

These ladybird picture books are particularly interesting because the illustrators aimed to draw realistic depictions of the objects presented. There is a lot of information here to be seen by the keen and curious little reader. Ladybird published a series of five of these little books and you can choose any one you can most easily find. They are entitled: A Ladybird First Picture Book… Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth. They are all of the same quality.

A great first book for looking through with a toddler, naming the familiar objects and speaking about them.
